Mon petit déjeuner idéal

Well, this is basically how I like to start out my day on the weekend -- truth be told, I'd love to be able to indulge in this kind of breakfast every day of the week, but in spite of getting up extra early I still can never manage to squeeze in enough time to eat more than a few slices of bread with some coffee before heading off to work. Sundays are my exception, though, and the photo above shows what I love to enjoy, slowly and preferably with a good book (or with my boy!), before lazing around the apartment or heading out, depending on my mood and my motivation level.

This photo was obviously taken a few months back, early September I believe, when it was still peach season, or the end of the season anyway... In today's case, the peach was replaced by a pink grapefruit (complete winter addiction, I can't seem to get enough of them!) and the coffee by a hot chocolate... I can't let a Sunday brunch go by without my oeuf à la coque -- although years ago I would have probably shrunk away in horror from a soft-boiled egg, these days I love scooping out the eggy goodness. Sea salt and freshly ground pepper make it all the better.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a tidbit from one of my favorite meals of the day -- of course, I'm a complete gourmande and love eating any meal, but breakfast just about tops the list for me. Funny thing is, back in the U.S. I loved breakfast too, but it usually consisted of bagels and cream cheese with orange juice, perhaps some coffee too. When I go back home to visit, I do love to have bagels then, but I don't necessarily miss them all that much over here, given the fact that the bread is so good. I've become a bit of a bread snob, though, because not just any ol' baguette will cut it for me anymore -- I like the good stuff! Perfect with salted butter and fig jam, my favorite. The baguette in the photo above is a multigrain one, and my boyfriend and I go out of our way to pick it up from a boulangerie that's not as convenient, but has just about the best bread in our neighborhood. So it's worth the walk in the cold...

Speaking of which, I'm off to toast myself up some warm baguette now, and to prepare some lentil soup. I need something comforting on this freezing Sunday! I plan on staying inside all day long... And if I'm feeling motivated enough, I might just make an apple-pear crumble with ginger. Ohhh, and I even have some speculoos in the cupboard -- the perfect crumble topping! Wake me up when it's time for breakfast again...

Yum. Weekend proper breakfasts used to be my absolute favourite back in Australia. I love having eggs and sausage together!

That egg looks so good. i forget about cooking them that way, i do enjoy them like that too. I have been eating tartines a lot lately too with butter and jam, so good in the cold weather. yummmm

Ah. The thing is, I think I really have it in me to be a gourmande, but I cannot seem to get myself interested in cooking. Inspiration strikes rarely and begrudgingly (I say begrudgingly because even if inspired to do some creating, I'm grumbling about the dishes piling up or the kitchen's layout or the tiny oven)... I can't square myself with the amount of time it takes to prepare something as compared with the time it takes to eat it, either. I know I'm supposed to be zen and find tranquility in the kitchen, but I'd rather find it over conversation and a glass of wine, at a favorite restaurant. Hrrm.

Maybe I'll find the right mindset someday. I'm thinking of Riana now, and I'm ashamed... what a lousy pioneer I would be. I've been known to go hungry rather than make dinner... Ah well. It's good for the waistline. ;)

Anyway. I can manage to fry an egg; that's fast. And I am getting hungry...

oeuf à la coque - thanks for that - now I know what to call them in french. Lily loves boiled eggs - me I can only handle them scrambled. And I'm with M2M - I miss my big aussie breakfasts - bacon, eggs (scrambled of course), sausages, hashbrown, grilled tomato. mushrooms, toast and a big pot of tea. I'd love the recipe for the lentil soup when you have a chance - I'm trying to feed the kids lentils as they have lots of iron but dont really know how to cook them

:)

Thanks, a lot Alice. Now I have to drag myself out of my sick bed to make a soft-boiled egg. Your photo is just too tantalizing. (And cheers to breakfast lovers!)

I'm glad my egg shot put some of you in the mood for breakfast -- I'm always in the mood for eggs it seems like these days!

Riana, I can never get enough of tartines on the weekend, trust me! The toughest part is choosing between the mulitigrain bread and a traditional baguette. But this will interest you: my boyfriend's sister and brother-in-law got a bread machine ages ago and have finally started putting it to use, baking their own bread a few times a week. It was inspiring, and tasted quite nice! They said it does save them a lot of money, which doesn't surprise me -- when I calculate how much we spend on baguettes throughout the year, it makes me cringe... I still have so much to learn! (and if I'm not mistaken, you mentioned baking bread without the machine too, didn't you?)

Joy Suzanne, I hear you on the laziness -- the cooking really only comes to me when I'm feeling motivated... And trust me, these days I'm far more motivated to COOK than CLEAN! That's what I dread the most at home, the housecleaning. So much so that I wish we could afford to have someone else do it -- but I know I can't justify that! Our apartment is not that big, I just never feel like I do a good job in the cleaning department.

But I love the challenge and excitement of trying a new recipe, or pulling out something tried-and-true -- then again, tried-and-true for me means something I've been cooking or baking for the last two years! I'm new to the kitchen, trust me. I think when the time comes, you'll cook, when it becomes a pleasure. That's how I feel about it. And I figure that when you're as gourmande as I am, you have to eventually enjoy making the stuff yourself!

Of course, I'm all for going out to eat and having someone ELSE do it -- I dread the clean-up part too! But budget constraints won't allow that all that often for us either...

I agree that the cleanup is the worst part of cooking, especially when your kitchen is small. I just can't handle leaving dirty dishes in the sink, whereas my boy doesn't mind it at all. Then again, I don't mind if a little bit of clutter builds up elsewhere in the apartment. It all depends on your point of view, I guess. But the kitchen has quickly become my domain!

Penny, you've inspired me -- I've been short on blog post ideas lately, and just out of it really because of the strikes, but maybe I'll post my lentil soup recipe -- this blog is fast becoming more food-related than I expected! ;-)

Watch out for the side effects of eating lentils soup. Just make sure the father in law's not in the room. If you see what I mean...

(referring to an old post of yours...)

;-)

PS! Am I ever going to see you again?

Hello! Nice blog! That picture really made me hungry! :)

I don't have enough time to enjoy breakfast during the week so I usually have cookies and coffee, tea and toasts or cereal. I try to vary a lot during the weekend though.

Have a nice day,
